CONTROL YOUR STRESSORS
Stress is a normal psychological and physical reaction to the demands of life. Everyone experiences it, whether it’s at work, home, or anywhere in-between. But, like a healthy diet, managing stress is an equally important component of leading a healthy lifestyle.
Learning how to identify and manage our stressors gives us a range of ways to reset, recalibrate, and recommit to our mental wellbeing.
Try these relaxation techniques to help keep your stress levels at bay:
- Positive affirmation. Positive self-talk can help create a healthy mindset. Stay positive with thoughts by telling yourself that “I can do this.” or, “I can tackle this challenge or project by taking one step at a time.”
- Breathe. Make it a microHabit by choosing a small, simple action like taking 5 deep breaths and connect it with a cue or reminder to initiate the behavior. For example, say to yourself, “when I make my morning coffee, I will take 5 deep breaths. I will do that every day in order to clear my mind and start the day with clarity.”
- Stretch. Stretching helps reduce muscle tension and increase blood flow throughout the body. Take a few minutes to stretch every couple of hours, especially if you’ve been stationary or seated for an extended period.
- Reach out to your network. Reach out to me, your independent OPTAVIA Coach, or someone in the OPTAVIA Community to talk through any stressors you are facing in the current state of your health journey. As your Coach, I can share my experiences and lend support.
- Get outside. The sun and fresh air provide a change of scenery that can help you relax while also providing a daily dose of vitamin D. Go for a short walk on a nice day to refresh and revitalize your mind and body!
- Do something you love. Whether it’s hiking, painting, or using the fresh fall air to garden, immersing yourself in your favorite hobby can be a pleasant distraction. Your thoughts and worries will decrease, making you feel more relaxed.
